In a colony of social insects like ants, termites or bees they play different roles as workers, reproducers, soldiers, the queen etc. In order to have a stable colony.
In the same vein, as humans we have job descriptions which makes our community stable- the soldiers, medical personnels, factory workers etc. And it is the same in the blogging community.
“Man is a social animal”–Aristotle.
The need to have a niche that ranges from lifestyle, fashion, poetry, travel, gossip etc. Has been emphasised even before I had thoughts of starting my blog.
I have read just shy of 100 blogs about how important it is to have a niche as a blogger. Even accomplished bloggers recommend it! who else to believe than the ones who know the nitty-gritty of the blogosphere? They argue that having a niche-less blog makes a blog haphazard and people don’t know what to expect because the blog is all over the place and that is a pretty solid argument.
After reading those blogs and taking mental notes, I couldn’t come up with a niche. I was niche-less while I thought about starting a blog and still niche-less 7 months after starting it.
I heard about people who deleted their blog because they got bored of their niche and wanted a fresh start blogging about another topic entirely and then got bored again and again.
I didn’t want their story to be mine. So I came up with the blog name- Sim‘s Jollies & Jaunts because I felt like it encompassed all things Sim.
I blog about life generally through my eyes- my experiences, pleasures and thoughts.
I’ll also like to blog about the dish I made and the destination I travelled to. Although I am a food dinosaur, I hate travelling and this is neither a food nor travel blog.
I’ll like to write DIY posts and ramble about how my hair has stopped growing even when this is not a lifestyle or hair maintenance blog.
I’ll like to blog about the trending fashion accessories I love, how much I love my new sweater, the shoes omoni oboli wore to the farm and the 70 million naira a monkey swallowed. (This happened after a snake swallowed 36million naira) even when this is neither a fashion nor gossip blog.
I’ll like to blog about the benefits of knowing your genotype and overcoming menstrual pain even when this is not a health blog.
I’ll like to blog about the great millani powder I bought from one mallam for half the price beauty stores sell it, how to not shed tears to aviod ruining your eyeliner and how fair and white gold made me lighter and cocoa butter vaseline came to my rescue. But this is not a beauty or skin care blog.
I’ll like to blog about making better monetary choices and living on a budget but that does not make this a finance blog.
Writing this made me remember the emoji movie😀.
I love the idea of a one-stop-read blog and I give myself permission to be me. Maybe someday I’ll be comfortable in one niche but for now I am happy with this, because at the end of the day, I don’t make any money from blogging (perhaps I will someday) and the only thing that can keep me consistent is the happiness of knowing this is my space and I can blog about anything.
