Good day everyone, let me ramble for some minutes.
I recently got my licence to practice almost 9 months after finishing my degree exams and it was liberating. I received a lot of congratulatory messages and compliments which felt nice but, beneath the happy face full of makeup as I took the oath that day, were thoughts of the future. The realisation that my independent life has started has been there for a while, but now it is stronger.
I have to do a compulsory internship for one year before proceeding for the compulsory youth service which also lasts for a year.
Getting a place for internship isn’t a cake walk and apart from graduating with a good class of degree, knowing someone with the right connections is what really gets your foot in the door. In order words, you have to know someone that knows some, that knows someone that knows the person fixing the names.
It is less than a month after we were handed our licences but the feeling that very soon everyone will find a place and start is nagging and I think about myself.
What does the future hold?
My parents are surely making the necessary calls and everything but the feeling that human beings have the tendency to disappoint is there. What if it takes too long for me to get a place, what will be my excuse?
More than half my classmates feel I already have a dozen places to choose from simply because my parents are health workers and as much as I can, I try to correct the impression before my future helper hears and thinks I don’t need help.
Due to the unemployment rate in the country, some people do internship 2-3times which further reduces the chances of fresh graduates. It is a punishable offence but I don’t blame them too much.
Na condition make crayfish back bend.
It is more annoying because your entire life (professional/education wise) is put on hold.
No internship equals no NYSC which equals no masters in the country, no government job, no freedom to start a private practice etc.
Some people wait a year, two years even up to four years before they get a place. Others do it for free after waiting all these years without finding a place.
Imagine spending 5years in school living off your parents and still working for free for one full year and living off your parents. Not because the facility can’t afford to pay more people. They just won’t take more people because it will reduce the amount of money available for stealing and they are hell bent on overworking the ones they take.
The salary of an intern medical laboratory scientist is approximately #150,000 ($406) per month, but most hospitals do not pay up to this. The range varies and some pay as low as #90,000 ($244) per month.
It is much better than the #19,800 ($55) per month graduates are paid for NYSC. Although lucky people get extra pay from their place of primary assignment.

During the induction and oath taking ceremony, it was announced that internship will take a new face as students will be posted to internship approved facilities upon graduation in order to curb the increasing number for frustrated graduates (including pharmacy, optometry, dental, radiography, physiotherapy, and MBBS graduates). But it’s like everything else in the country. The government will sit on the matter untill yours truly.
My extended family used to think immediately after graduation everyone is supposed to go for the national youth service but I had to explain the whole concept of internship to them and I always ended with:
“I am at home because I haven’t been licenced so I can only start when I am given my licence”.
Now that excuse is out the window because they all know I have been inducted.
All these thoughts boggle my mind. My future scares me a lot….
After writing this, I stumbled on a spoken words video on facebook. It made me feel A LOT better. I feel EVERYONE should see it.
